BMJ Interview: Mary Robinson
10 Oct, 08 | by Birte Twisselmann
Journalist Karen McColl speaks to Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, about health worker migration.
BMJ Interview: Mary Robinson [6:57m]:
Recruiting health workers by developed countries is not undermining the health care system of poor countries, especially when health professionals are leaving on their own due poor facilities in the country. Here, if we are serious about such problems, we need to address the problems faced by health care professionals and their family members (e.g. schooling of their kids and basic facilities) in their countries.
Respective government may be helped to identify solve the problems. Organizations like WHO may create a fund for such work and developed countries may be requested to contribute, but certainly they should not be compelled to do so in order to make a program effective. Developed countries also have certain basic rights.
